A Study On Translator's Subjective Dynamics And Its Constraints

In traditional translation studies, the translator's role in translation was always neglected and his subjective dynamic role was even rarely discussed. Until major turn happened in Western translation studies in the 1970s, the status of the translator as the subject was elevated objectively with the development of translation theories and the dynamic role of the translator was gradually brought to surface in translation studies since then.Based on Western translation approaches since the 1970s and contemporary domestic scholars' researches on the issue, the thesis attempts to explore the translator's subjective dynamics and its constraints in translation activities with the support of examples by mainly combining Gadamer's Hermeneutic theory and Vermeer's Skopos theory. It elaborately analyzes various manifestations of the translator's exertion of subjective dynamics in the whole process of translation activities, attempting to point out that it is the translator's exertion of subjective dynamics that contributes the smooth accomplishment of translation activities. However, the translator's exertion of the subjective dynamics is not unbinding; it will always be constrained by some factors. The subjective dynamics and its constraints often exist side by side. Hence the translator should have clear awareness of this and appropriately exert the subjective dynamics in the translation practice.
