According to Skopos theory proposed by Hans J Vermeer, translating,as any other behavior, has its purpose or intention. The purpose exerts great influence on translation and determines the translation methods and translation skills. He put forward three basic rules which include Skopos rule, coherence rule and fidelity rule.Literary translation is an important way to spread literary works of different languages.Under Skopos theory and its three rules, this paper analyzes and discusses the translation strategies and methods for the translation of 2017 Costa First Novel Award,Eleanor Oliphant is Completely Fine.Vermeer put forward that Skopos rule requires translators to make the translation purpose clear during translating, coherence rule demands the fluency of target text, and fidelity rule lays stress on the inter-language coherence between the translation and the source text, that is,the translation should be faithful to the source text.Among the three rules,Skopos rule dominates the translation process while coherence rule and fidelity rule function as subordinate rules. The three rules together ensure the quality of target text.In the core chapter, the translator analyzed the translation process from the perspective of three basic rules of Skopos theory.Under the guidance of Skopos rule,four-Chinese-character structures and repetition are used in the translation process.Division and reorganization, conversion as well as omission are adopted while translating the source text under the direction of coherence rule.Free translation and amplification are utilized in the translation under the instruction of fidelity rule. This paper verifies the feasibility of applying Skopos theory to the translation of literary works. In other words,Skopos theory can guide literary translation such as novel translation. And the three rules are of significance for the translation from different aspects.Under the guidance of Skopos theory and its three basic rules, the translator accomplished the transformation from source text to target text, trying to reproduce accurate information of source text in the target text and to obtain relatively readable target text.Hopefully this paper can provide some insights for novel translation study.
