A Study Of Variation In Business Interpretation From The Perspective Of Vermeer’s Skopos Theory

The status of business communications and negotiations is increasingly significant during China’s economic cooperations with foreign companies, just as China’s economy experiences the rapid development. Under such a circumstance, interpreters who have outstanding language skills and proficient interpretation skills are becoming the necessary power and key element for business communications. However, researches on business interpretations are performing a snail-like progress, which puts a negative influence upon China’s further development. Business interpretation is special and unique, but relevant specialized researches possess a frustrating amount.For a field of multinational business communications, both sides are encountering not only a huge language barrier, but also differences of culture, religion, ideology, customs, and mindsets. Moreover, business interpretation has a rigid demand of efficiency and quality, which produces huge pressure to interpreters who is undergoing complicated and shifty scenes. These impacting factors sometimes make business interpreters unable to form an equivalent interpretation, but flexibly use various adaptations, which is named as translation variation. Huang Zhonglian firstly put forward its concepts, and seven variation methods are derived from the essence of the concepts. In addition, skopos theory of Vermeer, one representative of German functionalist translation scholars, will also be involved as a reference. Vermeer claims that translation should not follow the traditional equivalent pattern, but use skopos to guide the translation strategies and skills. Skopos theory provides a theory basis for translation variation, and it will be studied in this thesis as the theory framework.This thesis aims to study business interpretation variation from the perspective of Vermeer’s skopos theory, which will work as a theory basis while Huang Zhonglian’s concepts of translation variation as an application reference. Features of business interpretation are combined with this study. Practical study research will be rehearsed in details in this thesis. Lots of business interpretation examples are quoted, then comes the specific application analysis on the concrete variation methods such as addition, omission, alteration and reorganization. The summarizing rules and specific methods will be studied in the chapter of case analysis to’testify their general application. All the analyses will be conducted with skopos theory as the theory basis.It is no doubt that the study of variation in business interpretation, with the guidance of skopos theory, is of certain conclusion and inspiration significance. On the other hand, it helps interpreters to play their subjectivity, and get rid of restrictions and pressures. Meanwhile, its practical value is increasingly prominent in such an era that Chinese and foreign economic exchanges and communications are getting more frequent and relevant demands of business interpretation are growing rapidly.
