Ernest Hemingway's The Old Man and the Sea is regarded as one of his most important work and classical one for its literary value. This thesis focuses on the analysis of the artistic techniques used in The Old Man and the Sea, trying to explore the skillful adoption of stream of consciousness and symbolism.First the thesis gives a bief introduction to the writer, the social and cultural background of Hemingway's age. Afterwards, the functions of stream of consciousness and symbolism are analyzed. The thesis examines how stream of consciousness and symbolism are interwoven and mixed together to develop the plots, to portray the character, and to deepen the theme. Hemingway's creative attempt sheds light on us that a writer may combine symbolism with the stream-of-consciousness techniques to reinforce the expressive force of his writing. The coherent combination of stream of consciousness and symbolism helps to form the themes of the novel, and realizes the profound unity of form and content.
