| The research into humor dates back to the Aristotelian and Platonic age in the West and was firstly recorded in Sima Qian's Records of Historians in China. Scholars have been studying humor from various angles, including philosophy, psychology, sociology, anthropology, medicine, linguistics, aesthetics, religious studies and so on. But humor translation studies drop behind. This thesis, with Skopos theory and Translation Variation Theory as the guiding theories, discusses linguistic humor from translation aspect on the basis of a descriptive study. The aims are to argue for the higher degree of translatability of linguistic humor, to summarize the strategies of linguistic humor E-C translation and to put forward principles to avoid the over-compensation that might happen in the process of translation.Linguistic humor has long been considered untranslatable. The reason is that its linguistic features can never be duplicated in another language. But the author of the thesis holds the different idea. She thinks that the conventional concept about translation and translation criteria hinders the linguistic humor translation more than linguistic features do. With the change of people's translation ideology and the emergence of new theories, we have reason to say the translatability of linguistic humor is much higher than we have thought. The author argues for the translatability of linguistic humor with Skopos theory and Translation Variation Theory as the theoretical support and at the same time points out just because the untranslatable can be shifted to the translatable in the framework of these two theories, it doesn't follow these theories allow linguistic humor translation to be dealt with at will. So after summarizing translation strategies, mainly compensation translation, the author brings forward three principles, Principle of Necessity, Principle of Minimum Compensation and Principle of Same Category Priority, to avoid over-compensation in linguistic humor translation practice.
