Verbal Substitution And Ellipsis In English And Chinese

The previous contrastive studies claim that in terms of verbal substitution and ellipsis,although there are many similarities in their employment in English and Chinese,the using of verbal substitution and ellipsis in Chinese is less than that in English.There is a tendency to repeat the verbs in Chinese.Verbal substitution and ellipsis are used to avoid redundant repetition and make the text brief.At present,most contrastive studies of verbal substitution and ellipsis in English and Chinese are limited to the level of description.There are certain conditions in the employment of verbal substitution and ellipsis,which need us to explore.The methodology adopted in this thesis stresses the contrastive study and the analysis of examples.The author makes an attempt to contrast verbal substitution and ellipsis in English and Chinese on the basis of Halliday and Hasan's theory and Zhu Yongsheng et al's study on this subject and takes the inductive way to analyze the collected corpus and describe the similarities and differences between English and Chinese.The author also attempts to give reasonable explanations to the differences and systematically discuss translation strategies of verbal substitution and ellipsis between these two languages.Firstly,the description and classification of English verbal substitute "do" and Chinese verbal substitutes "干","搞","弄" and "来" are given in the thesis. And at the same time the author analyzes the similarities and differences of verbal substitution in both languages.Secondly,the author describes the phenomenon of verbal ellipsis in both English and Chinese and gives a detailed classification of them.Then,grounding on a number of examples,the author has made a lot of efforts to analyze the influence of these differences on the understanding and expressing in the process of translation.The solution will be summarized accordingly.Thus the main aim of this thesis is to discuss the differences of verbal substitution and ellipsis in usage and the translation strategies.
