Substitution,Ellipsis And Logical Cohesion In The Translation Of The Academic Text

Substitution,ellipsis and logical cohesion are the main means of discourse coherence,especially in academic texts.Dealing with these factors in the process of translation is conducive to ensuring the quality of translation of academic texts.In this context,based on the translation of academic monograph Institutional Translation for International Governance,this practice report studies the problems of substitution,ellipsis and logical cohesion and proposes the corresponding strategies.After three stages of preparation,translation and analysis,this translation practice report discusses the problems and proposes the strategies.The outstanding translation problems are reflected in the following three aspects: The first is the problem of substitution.In this text,the demonstrative pronouns are frequently used,and the personal pronouns have unclear directions,making the translation difficult.The second is the problem of ellipsis.The structural ellipsis is prominent,and the ellipsis of components is also obvious.In the translation process,it is very important to compensate for the above ellipsis.The third is the logical cohesion.The formal structure of some sentences in this text does not highlight the logical cohesion,but implies the transition or causality,which also need to be properly handled in the translation process.After a comparative analysis of the initial and revised translation,the writer of the report proposes the following solutions: The first is to replace demonstrative pronouns with nouns and clauses,and to delete redundant personal pronouns.The second is to compensate nouns and nominal phrases,and to compensate main structures of clauses and sentences.The third is to manifest the transition and causality between sentences,and to use appropriate conjunction words to achieve logical cohesion between sentences.Based on the translation of academic texts,the problems and strategies are allfrom practice.It is hoped that both the Chinese translation and the report can provide reference for similar translation tasks.
