Research On New Words' Application In News Reports

News is the report on the latest happenings or big events, which is very sensitive to the new changes and developments in social life, fresh things, creative conceptions, inventive scientific achievements and advanced theories. This paper, probing into the research on new words used in news reports, will be conducive to the research of modern Chinese characters and help news reporters know the characteristics and application of new words. This paper, with the perspective of applied linguistics, employs the metrological method in analyzing the characteristics of new words used in news reports style in terms of its distribution and application.There are five parts in this paper.The introduction part, through a general sum-up of the contemporary study on new Chinese words, mainly presents the inadequate points in the study of new words and define the application of new words in news reports as the objects of this study. The source of study materials is based on Electronic Information Dictionary on Contemporary New Chinese words by Professor Kang Shiyong, editor-in-chief. The method of the study includes the integration of quantitative measurement and qualitative analysis, the matching of static observation and dynamic research, the combination of the macro-orientation and micro-exploration.Chapter one is on the distribution of new words in news reports. First, the author introduces the establishment and realization of "Label Information Collection of New Words in News Reports"; second, with the analysis from the perspective of the time distribution, syllable distribution, semantic distribution and frequency of usage of new words in news reports, the author draws an analytical conclusion through metrological and classified statistics. The characteristics of new words distribution are that, (a) new words in news reports are closely connected with social life, and (b) multi-syllable is a tendency though double-syllable is still dominant in the development of new words, etc.. Chapter two is on the characteristics of the application of new words in news reports. With the comparison and contrast of genuine news reports, the author sums up five basic characteristics, which are respectively: (1) new words collection in language field, which embodies the compatibility of new words with news reports style; in another way, new words from different fields can be applied extensively in news reports; (2) the join-in of accompanying new words, especially those with the affection of feelings and images; one the one hand, there is an increasing number of new words with affection of feelings being used in news reports; on the other hand, there are different categories for the new words with the affection of images; (3) the increasing coming-forth of loanwords and dialect words; (4) the rising phenomenon of word family; (5) the emerging of new words used on internet. Based on the above 5 characteristics, this paper continue to explore the reasons for theses characteristics from two perspectives, namely, new words and news reports style.Chapter three illustrates how to standardize the application of new words in news reports. After analyzing some mistaken usage of some examples and their reasons, the author attempts to put forward with several fundamental principles upon the application of new words, including the principle of fixed usage, the principle of essentiality, the principle of explicit meaning, the principle of taste, the principle of economicalness.The final part is the conclusion on the research of this paper, which also notes out the creative points of the research as well as the inadequate places of the paper.
