The study on New Media Art has been flourishing in both domestic and foreign academic fields. This very new style of art has, during the latest half century, advanced into the present prosperity with several fully fledged and sophisticated streams from the initial status of limited trends. It contributes new dimensions to the post-modernist arts. In the last 50 years especially, ideas about time and space have reinstated the narrative of image in art: in filmmaking and video, the theatricality of happenings, Performance and Installation art, digitally manipulated photography and Virtual Reality. The present status and future trend of New Media Art has long been elaborated by many scholars in its artistic language, thoughts, patterns, technical factors, medium scope, communicative chanels and etc. Its ontological meanings, however, has rarely been discussed. Besides, the aesthetic relations among its inner three dimensions-time, space, and image symbol-lacks in-depth examinations.Whereas, this article will adopt the autology of New Media Art to discuss its meanings of ontology. The newness of New Media Art will be highlighted. That is, how we orientate and interpret the core of"new", how we distinguish and classify the impact caused by the application of new technologies and mixed media, how to explain and analyse the contradictive as well as unitive relations among image, time and space in New Media Art. This article argues about some controversial academic notions and defines aesthetic scopes logically, in a hope to provide the study of New Media Art with tangible aims and stands.
