A Study Of The Images Of Confucius In Pictures And Statues In History

The Confucianism is one of the most representative traditional thoughts in China, meanwhile,the Confucius portrait has also become an important topic of painting and sculpture in Chinese history.This paper try to clarify the source and flow of the history of the pictures and statues of Confucius,and classify its main types from existing types by combing the image and document which is followed by field survey.By the comparison of images,it makes the distinction of different image pattems in Quzhou,Qufu Shengji temple and Qufu Qisheng temple of Confucius Xingjiao portrait,explores the Confucius "Xiaoying"and its influence on Confucius Xingjiao portrait.It also discusses the sacred image pattern about the Confucius portrait in the case of Confucius Mianliu statue in Dacheng Temple of the Qufu Confucius Temple and Confucius Shengwei image in engraving painting, explores the process of the non-religious and secular of Confucius portrait by analyzing the transition of Confucius image from being located on girders in Wei-jin period to mixing with Buddhism and Taoism image,and to being made from figures in reality. This paper puts the Confucius portrait to historical and cultural context,and discusses its unique spiritual connotation and cultural significance,finally draws to the conclusion that the images of confucius in pictures and statues in history is to meet the demands of educating public,constructing and consolidating state authority and ideological order by Rulers,and is also the results of an inherent spirit demand of the people.In sum,the Confucius portrait has the factors of the icon to a large extent.
