This thesis is intended to study the native transfer in Chinese learners'English learning by using metaphorical theories in modern cognitive linguistics. First, a comprehensive review of literature and research on language transfer is conducted. Second, relevant metaphorical theories, especially the mapping theory and the integration blend theory, are discussed. A theoretical framework based upon theories of metaphorical mapping and integration blending for the study of native transfer in English learning is formulated. Third, Chinglish caused by native transfer is analyzed from the aspects of word, sentence and idiom by using the metaphorical mapping theory. Fourth, suggestions are given for English learning and teaching regarding Chinglish expressions—the products of native transfer caused by metaphorical thinking in English learning.
