As one of the greatest inventions in the development history of human civilization, characters embody the essence of human wisdom. It has played an important role in development and inheritance of human civilization. In the history of every development stage, characters should be in consistent with the characteristics of the time. In the modern information society, with the swift development of internet information technology, and new media dominated by digital technology, fundamental changes have taken place in traditional communication media. Previous medium of paper has extended into a new media based on computer technology and advanced telecommunications network information transmission technology. Creating a totally new communication experience through a medium characterized by new media technology. Latin characters have respond to the environment mainly featured by new media technology.In particular, Chinese characters are now faced with a new "cultural ecosystem", essential change has taken place in both transmission ways and Chinese character users. Under the support of new media, an entirely new cultural ecosystem is constructed by diverse culture, language, and images. How to balance abstract art and patterns of Chinese characters? How to apply it to our visual environment and new media and transmission system? This requires designers to master basic disciplines of Chinese characters, to perceive international trend and at the same time get familiar with application methods of characters in different media.Therefore, based on the development of new media technology, this paper first made a research over the status and development trend of character design from three aspects: Typography design competition, Typography design institution, and Typography Design Corporation. Then conclusions of communication characteristics of Chinese characters were drew by further analysis of comparing communication features of Chinese and Latin under the condition of new media technology. Finally, relevant design practice was carried out to verify previous conclusions.
