Chinese characters, which contain the essence of Chinese culture, is the inscriber and transmitter of Chinese culture. As the evolution of from pictographs to abstract symbols, Chinese characters witness the change of ethnological religion, philosophy, morality, ethic, science, art and live. It is impossible to study Chinese well without learning Chinese characters. At present, Chinese as a foreign language teaching is vapidly developing. As far as the number of international students came to China increased year after year, the teaching task became arduous and the teaching quality and effects great concerned. Refer to various reasons, Chinese characters teaching is not satisfied and considered as a tough problem, which need more practice and innovation.Teaching Chinese characters by representation of etymological through multi-media is a proto-context method, which basis on the core of to trace down to the original Chinese culture. It tries to cast back to the origin of the characters formation and to represent its original niche. Consequently, learning and memorizing characters can became more efficient. It proved by teaching Chinese children. However, is this method also effective in teaching Chinese as a foreign language and how to use it? Maybe we can use the theory and the experiences of instructional technology to solve it.According to the teaching task and features of beginners of Chinese, this research designs network courses that emphasis on the method of teaching Chinese characters by etymological representation though multi-media. By means of related literature analysis and content analysis, it inducted and concluded current status and issues of teaching Chinese as a foreign language. And then we done a investigation on those students learning Chinese successful to find out if this method conformed to their cognitive psychology. After that, based on Dick& Karen's instructional design model, a package of e-learning resources have been developed, which including a of Chinese characters learning, advanced activation and evaluation the three major resources forum and uploaded to LAMS platform to design network-curricular activities unit and to carry out the on-line teaching activities.In the experimental stage, we started by a small-scale trial and based on feedback to be modified the course and the e-learning resources. Then we carried on a formal teaching activity last a mouth in X-college in USA and continuously further modified and improved according to evaluation of teaching effectiveness and collecting learner feedback. Due to various reasons, testing is not carried out smoothly, and to an extent affects the test results. However, this network course is proved feasible and valuable throughout this experiment. In the other words, the method "teaching Chinese characters by representation of etymological through multi-media" is useful in teaching Chinese to foreigners. The significance of teaching Chinese character by representation of etymological through multi-media technology is far more than helping foreigners to memorize, write and read Chinese. It motivates learners'interesting of Chinese and helps them to understand the law of character. It endeavors to explore the multi-dimensions feature of Chinese character culture and facilitate Chinese culture communication in the world. The followed research can considered about teachers training, learning resources developing, expand the scale of experiments and the cognitive psychology.
