Fu Baoshi was a well-known Chinese painting artist, and he was also one of the pioneers and founders of Chinese art history of contemporary age. He opens up virgin soil in the Chinese drawing history, the seal cutting history, the craft history, the Chinese fine arts timeline, and Shi Tao case research, which has paved the way for our art history moving towards the modern shape. Fu Baoshi has filled the blank to the history research of landscape painting, prompting Chinese landscape painting forward for several hundred years, and yielding creative results. Fu Baoshi's art historical and theoretical research pays attention to excavate intrinsic clue and the rule of Chinese art development. Among which the distinct vein, clear viewpoint, thorough understanding to art history, bold academic thought, as well as the scientific and rigorous research methods have made important contributions to the research of modern art history.Having studied and summarized, we can see he has approximately experienced two big transformations. One changed reason is to study abroad in Japan, which widened his horizon and accepted the Western advanced scholarly research idea, causing his historical and theoretical writings to move toward perfectly mature. We can see this kind of change from following aspects: The first was his methods of studying art history. He studied Chinese art history culturally, critically and systemically. And he used these methods all his life, but after studied in Japan, he used these methods more obviously and deeply. Fu Baoshi only studied the ancient art works at the beginning, but later he combined the former ancient works and the ancient art things we found from beneath together, and paid more attention to the art works itself, while at the beginning, the attention was little. At same time he studied from the picture angle of the art works. In content hand, we can also see some changes, because of the stress change of his study, the broadening of his knowledge, and the more ancient art works we found beneath the earth. The other changed reason is political factor and artistic policy change. After 50's of last century, Fu Baoshi's theoretical writings and art thought had a sweeping change, Owing to the main thoughts of the society.Fu Baoshi also succeeded in art theory. This can show from his study of Chinese art spirits and vein of thoughts, and the discussion about tradition and reform as well as his opinion about Chinese art value and its development.The thorough research on Fu Baoshi's art history and theory is helpful for us to understand the condition of Chinese art reforming to the modern stage, and the ideological changing vein as well as Chinese art history in the 20th century. Furthermore this thesis serves for establishing and consummating our modern art history, and plays an essential role on understanding Fu Baoshi himself and his art comprehensively.
