Tian Han is known as a dramatist in literature history. However, poetry is the first key for him to enter the literature world and get famous. Tian Han is more famous as a dramatist rather than as a poet. And critics pay more attention to his dramas than poems. Since 1919 when he began to create the first modern Chinese poem "Mei Yu", he has created nearly 1,000 poems in his whole life, including old style poems, modern Chinese poetry, lyrics and so on. He is a real poet.This thesis aims to make an overall analysis of Tian' creation of modern Chinese poetry and lyrics before 1949. Based on his sensitivity to the text style, Tian Han balanced his creation of modern Chinese poetry and lyrics between romance and reality. Before liberation, Tian Han's modern Chinese poetry were mainly created from 1919 to 1924, and his lyrics were mainly produced in the 1930s-1940s. Tian Han shows his uniqueness in his creation both by the interception of longitudinal creative phase and the comparison of horizontal text style.This thesis mainly adopts four ways to study Tian's creation-careful reading, comparative study, form study and cultural study. This paper tries to make an overall comment on Tian's modern Chinese poetry in his early times and the lyrics that were written in the 1930s-1940s, from form to thinking, from phenomenon to soul. The introduction gives a brief picture of this paper's starting point as well as the value. Chapter One, "Tian Han's modern Chinese poetry: romantic poetic heart and the reality behind it", analyses Tian's creation of modern Chinese poetry in his early times mainly from three perspectives-romanticism, reality and new romanticism. In his opinion, romanticism and new romanticism are closely related with each other. So the word "romance" in the title has two meanings. Chapter Two, "Tian Han's lyrics: reality and the romantic poetic heart behind it", is an overall analysis of Tian's lyrics creation in the 1930s-1940s. In this period, the content of his lyrics showed the characteristics of intense reality, mass and appeal, for he paid more attention to reality. At the same time, with a poet's sensitivity, he pours the poetic aesthetic feature of vividness and expressiveness into his lyrics. Chapter Three, "from modern Chinese poetry to lyrics: the shift of the text style and the inheritance of spirit behind it", firstly analyses the distinctive stylistic features between modern Chinese poetry and lyrics, showing that Tian Han's consciousness of the text style in his creation of modern Chinese poetry and lyrics. And then the author tries to find out the spirit features of Tian's creation in different stages and different styles, namely, the features of times, exploration and nation, which are exactly the value, the significance and the charm of Tian's creation. The conclusion goes to reality from history and summarizes the realistic significance of Tian Han's creation of modern Chinese poetry and lyrics as well as its inspiration to modernzdr poems.
