The newly-adapted historical drama"Chengying saved the orphan"based on the drama"the orphan of Zhao"of Yuan dynasty by the NO. 2 Yu opera troupe of Henan province achieved great success. Being awarded the national"Wenhua"prize and the prize of"wugeyi project"and also listed on the top of national stage art works, the modern stage version of this classical drama got the most authoritative recognition. Therefore, to conduct a systematic study of this excellent drama will have significant meaning on both theoretical exploration and practical implication.This thesis concentrates on the exploration of the overall achievements of this drama"Chengying saved the orphan"including its theme, thought, stage, music and so on. From its subject matter to its theme, from characters to its thought, from literary connotation to artistic expression, from stage presentation to music, this thesis attempts to give a thorough and systematic analysis of the artistic achievements of this high-quality Yu opera. With this basis, this thesis will go on to analyse and discuss the implications its success has for the present drama making.Except the introduction and conclusion, the main body of the thesis can be divided into the following four parts.Chapter one: the development of the subject matter in this drama. With the three dramas, namely the drama"the orphan of Zhao"of Yuan dynasty, the Beijing opera"seeking and saving the orphan"and the Yu opera"Chengying saved the orphan"as my samples, this thesis analyses the historical development of this story about the orphan of Zhao and explore the artistic resources of the concerning drama.Chapter two: the modern interpretation of the drama"Chengying saved the orphan". This thesis analyses the time spirit and the modern connotation which the drama manages to convey in a traditional subject matter. Chapter three: the stage presentation of the drama"Chengying saved the orphan". This thesis discusses the aesthetic value of its stage presentation from three angles: the aesthetic design, the shift of time and place and the performance art.Chapter four: the musical achievement of the drama"Chengying saved the orphan". This thesis analyses its outstanding achievement in musical composition from two angles: music design and characteristics of singing .
