On Marcuse's "One-Dimensionality" Theory

After the Second World War, capitalistic society assumed a lot of new situations and features with a new round of rapid development. Contrary to the Marx's language of that time, capitalism didn't die out, but took on more vitality. In opposition to those who asserted that captitalistic society would step into peaceful and prosperous state, Marcuse gived a deep analysis of a series of"One-Dimensionality"problems which are deeply hidden behind the capitalistic inveracious prosperity, in his book which is published in 1964 and named"One-Dimension Man",from another point of the irrational nature of capitalism and the history of temporary study. This article composed of 4 parts aims to find out some referable way for our today's socialistic modernization construction through systemic analyses and evaluations about Marcus's"One-Dimensionality"theory. It is composed of 4 parts.The first part is the background of"One-Dimensionality"theory's form. We learn that at present profound crises exist behind the superficial capitalistic inveracious prosperity ,by inspecting the positive and negative effects which are brought by the contemporary industrial civilization. Besides it also checks the realistic background of the"One-Dimensionality"theory's form.The second part is the theoretical intension of the"one-Dimensionality". It is illuminated from three aspects, which are the meaning of"one-Dimensionality",the realistic performance of it ,and the way that can transcend it .The third part is the gain and the loss: the review to the"One-Dimensionality"theory. Dialectical analysis and evaluation to the Marcuse's"One-Dimensionality"theory would be made. The contribution from the"One-Dimensionality"thought to the Marxist philosophy and its defect would be emphasized.The fourth part is practical significance of the"One-Dimensionality"theory. This chapter is the core of this article. After taking apart the profound humanitarianism spirit contained in the"One-Dimensionality"theory, its practical significance is argued from 4 respects, which are the construction of the views of value to us in the new century, establishing a correct outlook on development of science and technology, being on the stick to excessive expansion of instrumental Reason in contemporary China and the significance of paying attention to human solicitude in the process of modernization.
