Research On The Relation Among Attachment Internal Working Models, Interpersonal Relationship And The Loneliness Of College Students

These years, there are more and more mental health problems caused by loneliness among college student. Under this background, this research discussed the features and the relation among the internal working models (IWM), interpersonal relationship and the loneliness. The purpose of this research is discuss the occurrence mechanism of the loneliness on the base of the theory of internal working models, provide data and references for the studies of loneliness, and extends our understanding of loneliness in college students.Three Scales including Synthesized Diagnose Scale of Relationship, Relational Questionnaire (RQ) and UCLA Loneliness Scale (UCLA) were used for our research. Firstly the loneliness, types of IWM and interpersonal relation condition was examined in a sample of 729 students. Then several factors that were related to loneliness such as secure internal working model, fearful internal working model, preoccupied internal working model and interpersonal disturbance were discussed. These factors were then combined to construct a roadmap to explain loneliness in college students.The main findings are as following:1. From big to small, the proportions of four kinds of IWM are securing IWM (35.7%), dismissing IWM (24.1%), preoccupied IWM (22.7%), and fearful IWM (17.4%). IWM doesn't significantly differ among gender, grades, majors and source place of students.2. College students have certain degree harassment on interpersonal relationship of which communication is the most serious. Interpersonal relation harassment did significantly differ between male students and female students,and among birthplace, but did not significantly differ between grades and major.3. College students have some degree harassment on loneliness, male college students'loneliness is higher than that of female students, grade three university students'loneliness is highest, senior university students take the last place. Science college students'loneliness is higher than liberal arts undergraduates, rural undergraduates'loneliness is higher than urban college students', but the difference did not reach significant level.4.There are strong negative relations between secure internal working model,fearful IWM interpersonal relation harassment, and loneliness. Fearful IWM and preoccupied IWM are positively related to both inter- personal relation harassment, loneliness. But dismissing IWM is uncorrelated to secure IWM, secure IWM uncorrelated to both Fearful IWM and, dismissing IWM.5. Path analysis shows that secure IWM can impose negative affection on loneliness directly or indirectly by interpersonal relation harassment. Fearful IWM can impose positive affection on loneliness directly or indirectly by interpersonal relation harassment. And preoccupied IWM can impose positive affection on loneliness directly or indirectly by interpersonal relation harassment. Interpersonal relation harassment is part mediation in the path analysis.We can conclude form the main findings that the type of the IWM is securing IWM, college students have some degree harassment on loneliness and interpersonal relationship. There are strong relations between secure IWM , fearful IWM, preoccupied IWM, interpersonal relation harassment and loneliness. Interpersonal relation play the partial mediation role between secure IWM, Fearful IWM, preoccupied IWM and loneliness.
