| 2In modern Chinese,'V+hao'pattern is known for its wide usage,flexible meaning and complicated structure. There are few systematics and thorough studies of'V+Hao'pattern in the linguistic field. On the foundation of prior researches, this paper not only systematically studies the syntactic function and semantic feature of'V+Hao'pattern , but also tries to describe the course of the grammaticalization of Hao (a Chinese character) and explains the causes behind it through a diachronic analysis of how Hao is used after verbs.1. Syntactic analysis of'V+Hao'pattern. Based on the achievement of previous researches, this paper studies the main syntactic functions of'V+Hao'pattern, and discusses, as well, the rules of how the adverbial modifiers are used before it and the objects after. The simultaneous presence of'V+Hao'pattern and'Le'(another Chinese character) is also touched on.2. Semantic analysis of'V+ Hao'pattern. This paper analyzes that who or which Hao semantically points to , in detail and classifies it into 3 categories of'improving-type','result-type'as well as'accomplished-type'. The thesis concludes the subtle differences of them. Moreover, this paper holds that verbs used in the'V+Hao'pattern should bear the semantic features of continuity, independence and completeness.3. Grammaticalization process of'V+Hao'pattern. Through studying the practical usage of Hao after verbs in the ancient Chinese language, this paper discusses how Hao evolves from an ordinary verb into a sign of grammatical pattern which represents completeness, and explains more objectively, as well, why Hao was grammaticalized by discussing the change of Hao's position in the sentence, how Hao evolves from a single verb into a component of a double-verbed phrase, and what role metonymy plays in Hao's grammaticalization etc..4. Comparative study of similar patterns. Both'V+Hao'pattern and'V+Wan'pattern can represent the end of certain action, but they cannot interchange freely because of the restriction caused by the subtle difference in meaning and the influence of usage as well.This thesis has 3 innovative features:A. This thesis gives both quantitative and qualitative analysis of verbs in'V+ Hao'pattern and tries to obtain a more scientific and reliable conclusion through statistically studying the features and categories of the verbs fitting in this pattern.B. Since there are few analysises and discussions about the grammaticalization of Hao in the existing material, this paper tries to describe the course of the grammaticalization of Hao and gives a reasonable explanation of the causes behind it through a diachronic analysis of how Hao is used after verbs.C. This thesis starts to discuss the differences between'V+Hao'pattern and'V+Wan'pattern from their semantic features to other aspectsThis thesis is significant in both the teaching of Chinese language and the processing of computer information. |
