A Research Into The Translation Of Computer English From Nida's Functional Equivalence

Computer English (abbreviated in this thesis as CE), a special register of English, in this paper, refers to the English of describing computer and its relevant technologies, that is to say mainly for laymen readers. The translation of CE is a new issue that translators have to deal with in the Computer Age.Based on Nida's theory on functional equivalence, this paper analyzes how this theory guides the translation of Computer English.The functional equivalence is the key theory pointed by Eugene A. Nida. According to Nida, a minimal, realistic definition of functional equivalence could be stated as"the readers of a translated text should be able to comprehend it to the point that they can conceive of how the original readers of the text must have understood and appreciate it".Specifically speaking,"functional equivalence"to the translation of Computer English, means the rendered version must perform these three functions to the same or at least to the most similar extent as the original Computer English does. Nida's dynamic equivalence defines the goal of dynamic equivalence as seeking'the closest natural to the source-language massage'and'aims at complete naturalness of expression'.'Naturalness'is the key requirement for Nida.After a detailed introduction to Nida's functional equivalence, the paper discusses the lexical and syntactical features of CE. Then, it puts forward several corresponding methods under the guidance of Nida's functional equivalence. In the end, the paper attempts to discuss some implications about the general trends of CE translation and requisites for the translators.It must be pointed out that in terms of both breadth and depth, the study is still very limited. It is only a tentative exploration of the translation of CE from Nida's functional equivalence, If it can shed some light on the studied of the translation of CE from Nida's functional equivalence, the author's efforts will be worth all the while.
