American China Studies in 20th century underwent a big development, Arthur William Hummel was the participator and witness of this process. This thesis puts the study on Arthur William Hummel under the extensive backgrounds of the American China Study in 20th century, the thesis aims to show the unique contribution and significance of his research on China Studies.This thesis consists of three chapters. Chapter 1 discusses Hummel's academic life, his predestined relationship with China, and puts an emphasis on Eminent Chinese of the Ch'ing Period, 1644-1912 compiled by Arthur William Hummel as editor in chief, as well as his attitudes and views towards Chinese culture. Chapter 2 and Chapter 3 study his research on the contribution for American Library of Congress and Chinese Culture to describe the cause and effect of his main content and theory as soon as possible respectively. By viewing Hummel's research on China Study as a clue to look into the basic development of American China Studies in 20th century, this thesis aims to find a mirror by which we can examine our culture and to offer a constructive academic angle for our contemporary culture construction.
