| In recent years, China has been carrying out the curriculum reform of elementary education. Theories such as democratization of education, return-to-life and development of individuality spring up, which are aimed at solving the separation of education and life. Therefore, life curriculum or humane solicitude turns to be the most popular topic in circle of curriculum theory.Recalling the history of western curriculum theory, we find out a tradition of humane solicitude shaped from the late 19th century to the previous half of 20th century. Dewey, existentialism, phenomenology and sociology clarified the meanings of different life in original perspectives. China also inquired the same issue from Confucius to further extent. Emphasizing on the connection between life and education is one of the features of Chinese educational thought.It proves that the life curriculum and how does the curriculum improve individual life are the popular issues in curriculum history. Former scholars provided various perspectives.Choosing WuMi as the study's objective depends on two reasons: firstly, WuMi was a cultural celebrity in modern times; secondly, he provided a humanism perspective in considering of life and curriculum. In particular, he developed a classical life curriculum called "literature-life curriculum", which was ignored for a long time in circle of curriculum theory.This paper aims to analyse WuMi's instructing practice in terms of his classical humanism, to reveal the meaning of moral education and to summarize the theory of "teacher is curriculum" and the inspiration of life education by exploring the virtues of cultural heritage.However, WuMi's life education has its own limitations. Firstly, it concerns about the "advanced level of life"—spiritual needs, which differs from Dewey's pragmatism. Secondly, he himself held a strong sense of elitism, so he ignores the survival needs of education in poor regions. |
