Objectives: To investigate the prevalence of Body Dysmorphic Disorder (BDD) in Hainan undergraduates. To analyze the relationship of BDD and self-acceptance, body self-confidence, experience of childhood abuse and neglect and other risk factors. Methods: Stratified cluster random sampling method was used to choose 2463 students, that is, one class in each grade in Hainan University, Hainan Medical College, Hainan Normal University, Hainan Occupation Technology College and Haikou Economy Technology College. All the subjects were asked to complete a self-design scale, Body Dysmorphic Disorder Scales (BDDS), Self-acceptance Questionnaire (SAQ), Body Self-esteem Scales (BES), Child Abuse and Neglect Scales (CPANS) and SCL-90 Scales. Results: (1) The prevalence of BDD in Hainan undergraduate students was 4.95% in this study, that was 53 males and 69 females, and sex differences were not significant. There were no significant differences of the prevalence of BDD between different undergraduate students' sex, schools, grades, races and ages in Hainan undergraduates. (2) The prevalence of BDD in Hainan undergraduate students was correlated with self-acceptance (Beta=-0.056, P=0.000), body self-confidence (Beta= -0.073, P=0.007), experience of childhood abuse and neglect (Beta= 0.051, P=0.013), mental health (SCL-90) (Beta=0.274, P=0.000). Conclusions: (1) The prevalence of BDD in Hainan undergraduate students was 4.95% in this study. The relationship of the prevalence of BDD and undergraduate students' sex, race, school, grade and age were not significant. (2) The degree of self-acceptance, body self-confidence, child abuse and neglect and mental health are risk factors of BDD.
