Irving Babbitt and his New-Humanism have had great influence on Liang Shiqiu and Wu Mi, the very reprentative of Xue Heng School. This influence had continuously reached into the field of literary writing and criticism in the 20' s. Nevertheless, the acceptence and influence of Irving Babbitt' s theory had led to divergent theoretical forms when the Xue Heng scholars and Liang approached the intenpretention and utility of New-Humanism. This phenomenon displayed the complex situation caused by Ivring's thinking on Mordern Literature. Therefore, the exact and definite way to exhibit how Irving' s idea affecting the modern literature is to get into the historical context and the inner experience and methodology of the therorist. This thesis is about the New-Humanist context in America at that time, the origin of the theory, the new definition, as well as how the Xue Heng scholars and Liang accepted and applied the New-Humanism.
