Research On The Similar Sound Features As Demonstrated In The Films Of Chinese And Western New Generations Since 1990s

Postmodernism is a war to fight against tradition. It tries its best to diverge and maintain divergence. It is a synonym of diversity and tolerance. It emphasizes image, liberties desire, calls the process of unconsciousness, and no longer constrains perception but liberates it. Thereupon, under this cultural background, many things'has changed significantly.From the 1990s, Chinese and Western films went into a period of global competition. Under the dawn of new age, a group of edgy films that promoted decadency, violence and untraditional films came out quietly, and they gradually attracted masses. The directors who create these films accept the similar idea and cultural influence, and their processes of growing were similar. They felt their way in a broad sea of postmodernism, and use their films to force upon their own ideas. They are called the New Generation Director.In New Generation Directors'films, there is a film element which expresses the same characteristic--film sound. The development of film sound is a lurking process. And New Generation Directors'film sound did not come out abruptly; it was a change depending on previously sound creation. However, whatever Chinese or Western New Generation Director, they show consistence of method of using film sound and the postmodernism culture and esthetic significance in the film, although their films don't have a unified style. The characteristics of sound showed in these films which is of diversity,popularity,sensation,arbitrariness,fragments and bold criticism bears every feature of the age. New Generation Directors use this particular narrative method to concern common people even border people's daily life and tiny feeling, and it shows courage of exploring, seeking knowledge and experience.Up to now, there has not been a complete theory of film sound, and no people have made any systematic analysis on New Generation filmic sound. This paper mainly uses comparative research method and examples to analyze document collected, arrange the development process of Chinese and Western New Generation film sound; sum up general character of sound between them. I want to try to forecast its significance and development tangency of its future, and hope it to be some help to the research and knowledge on filmic sound making of Chinese films.
