These days, the impact of China on the whole world is greater than ever before. International communication increases with China's role in world affairs on the rise. More and more westerners have great interest in the Chinese culture and some are even fascinated by ancient Chinese works. In the influence of"constructing a harmonious society", Confucius draws people's attention again, and to find"harmonious elements"from the original Confucianism becomes the main task of The Analects translation now.Through the analysis of Waley's version of The Analects, the author of this thesis tries to get the new requirements of its translation—keep the integrity and original nature of the Confucianism. This requires the translators to pay more attention to the transmission of Chinese traditional culture than to the transferring of language during its translation. Chapter Three and chapter Four of this thesis would discuss respectively the main concepts of culture transmission and culture translation strategies for different texts. In chapter Three, through the definition of language, culture and translation we can know that language is the carrier of culture. So culture transmission should be the main task of the translation. Then the author tries to get that culture equivalence is an important factor to achieve equivalence translation. On this basis, Chapter Four further discusses the possibility of culture transmission during the process of translation- culture translatability, and the culture transmission strategies according to textual types, translation purpose and the status of source culture. The research on the transmission of Confucianism during the translation of The Analects would be helpful to the understanding of our history and traditional culture. The author hopes this thesis would throw some light on the translation of The Analects and make benefits to the dissemination of Chinese traditional culture.
