On The Translation Strategies And Methods Of Chinese Central Culture-loaded Words:Pluralism And Choices

The Chinese culture has been constantly accumulated in the long history,and eventually becomes the brilliant culture catching the world’s attention.Among the brilliant culture,there are a large number of classics that represent the essence of Chinese culture,so the ancient books with Chinese cultural characteristics are translated into English,which can let the world know China,understand the broad and profound Chinese culture and help Chinese culture “go out” in the global cultural exchange.Among the great many classics,The Analects of Confucius profoundly embodies the outstanding traditional culture of the Chinese nation,so it is a must-read classic which helps westerners to understand Chinese civilization.Classics condense national central culture and CCLWs embody the essence of central culture.Therefore,it’s of great significance to discuss the translation of CCLWs in The Analects of Confucius against the backdrop of traditional Chinese culture “going out”.Through the analysis of translation studies of CCLWs in The Analects of Confucius,the author finds different translators apply different translation strategies and methods.Besides,different scholars have different understandings of CCLWs in the source text,which gives the CCLWs different linguistic forms and connotations.Accordingly the author puts forward the pluralism-and-choice problem: in plural translations,which one is more effective to reproduce the Chinese CCLWs and help the original Chinese culture “go out”? It can be seen from the literature review that some scholars pay attention to the plural translations of cultural words and some do not pay attention to it.Even if some scholars have mentioned pluralism,they did not provide solution against the backdrop of culture “going out”.Therefore,the author attempts to solve the plural translation and choice problem of CCLWs in The Analects of Confucius against the backdrop of culture “going out”.In the comparison of English versions,the author notices plural translation phenomenon of CCLWs and raises pluralism-and-choice problem.Next,the author uses Gadamer’s hermeneutics and readers’ response theory to explain plural translation phenomenon of CCLWs.And then through the literature review,the author confirms that the problem is not solved.The translation has plural versions,but each translation behavior is the only unrepeatable word selection.So we wonder how to make translation choice for CCLWs in The Analects of Confucius “going out”.According to skopos theory,the translators’ translation strategy and method should serve the purpose of culture “going out”.If the CCLWs could be understood and accepted,the translation,made possible by certaintranslation strategy and method,should reproduce the original Chinese culture as much as possible.Therefore,the translation strategy of CCLWs is foreignization rather than domestication.But the translation method to realize foreignization strategy is not the well-accepted literal translation.Although literal translation seems to be faithful,readers can’t understand or receive the connotation of the original text due to its strangeness.Enlightened by the translation method to introduce some central English culture-loaded words,the author thinks that transliteration plus note should be the first choice for Chinese CCLWs against the backdrop of Chinese culture “going out”.In addition,the thesis also discusses the translation method choice for CCLWs in different situations.
