In the development of human civilization, multi-cultural collision and mutual infiltration play an important role. In the human cultural exchanges, Western civilization spread to the East and Eastern civilization spread to the West are two important fields. But in practice research, the former is the most frequently discussed topic by Chinese scholars, and the latter whether the researchers or results are still very few, what is inappropriate of China's role in the course of world civilization. One of the reasons caused this situation is, most of our research is from China, focus on the impaction that Western culture sharpen China's society and culture. Since the 1990s, Economic Globalization valuing diversity process expanded our focus of research. We need to study this issue.World history is an interacted process. Not only Western shaping China's modernization movement, Chinese images also shaped Western culture as an alternative. This point can be seen clearly from the Chinese images in the Western world.Focusing on the 20th century, this essay analyzes the otherness of Chinese images in many books: Doctor Fu Manchu (Sax Rohmer), House of Earth(Pearl S.Buck), The Anthill(Suzanne Labin), Political Pilgrims(Paul Hollander), Chinese Shadows(Simon Leys), China Wakes(Nicholas. D. Kristof and Sheryl. WuDunn), and then expatiates on the United States is how to create Chinese images, to see the interpretation and the Misreading, to see the ever-changing China, how to use the Chinese images in the history of the 20th century in the United States. Display occurrence and evolution, traditional and prototype, understanding and imagination, fiction and bias, and the present and Future.This essay is divided into five parts:The first part is the introduction. Analysis of several very important concepts, brief review of the history of western Chinese images, summed up the special significance of the 20th century.In the second part, analysis Doctor Fu Manchu as the representative Chinese images in the early 20th century. Explore the realities and the historical reasons.In the third part, the author analyzes the tendency of Chinese poetry, as the representative House of Earth. The article reflects persistent in the poetic land and China story embodies the spirit of the United States.In the forth part, shows that the Chinese images in the 1950s began to repeatedly change. The founding of the People's Republic of China changed paradise into hell. 60-70 1990s, the United States had improved the image of China; China has become a red Utopia. After 1975, Chinese images of the United States low tide, this awakening led to China threat.The last part is the conclusion. The Chinese images in the United States in the 20th century have vacillating between two prototypes, heaven or hell. American's understanding of China is a mirror of history. This mirror will help us improve our national character.
