Wang Guowei occupies a unique place in the History of Chinese Aesthetics. Researches on him mainly focus on fields, such as his annals, biography, aesthetical thinking and literary criticism, etc. Exploring the motivation of aesthetic researches will help to thoroughly understand his academic thinking and clear the source of his aesthetic thinking and academic diversion.This thesis will explore his motivation of aesthetic researches basing on contents of his study experience and aesthetic researches. According to the psychology, the motivation is divided into drive and incentive. The immanent cause of his aesthetic researches is the double need for knowledge and affection, and it is both embodied in his academic idealism and academic conduct. Wang Guowei studies the aesthetics based on the idea of"useless use". The coalescence of the utility and non-utility to the aesthetics meets the needs of his chase of the pure knowledge and the need of affection. His desire for knowledge is embodied in applying himself hard to his thinking and constructing his academic system and the self-design of his life. His emotional world is constructed by the anxiety for the individual life and the humanistic consideration for others. The suffering of his soul not only originates from the innate personal character, but also from the acquired education and upbringing and life experience. He hopes to solve problems of anxieties for life and the society by the emotional solace got from the esthetic and aesthetic education. Aesthetic researches on him started against the background of western learning progressively spread to the East and the traditional academic change. The dissemination of western learning is divided into three levels, implement, institution and culture. The gradual change of these levels was embodied in his academic choice. Wang Guowei was encompasses in the era when Chinese scholar bureaucrats were transforming into Modern intellectuals. He was much under the influence of the traditional academic. His thought feature and way of act reflects the difficult transitional process of traditional scholar bureaucrats. Contemporaneous scholars influenced aesthetic researches on him, too. The deep and unique motivation of aesthetic researches on Wang Guowei decides his aesthetic characteristic. He initiated for all posterity the academic tradition for truth and life.
