It's the necessary trend of the modern education to change students' study style and develop their independent study ability. Promoting students' independent study has become the hot topic of discussion for the past 20 years that teachers teaching English pay attention to. The lifelong study thought has been raised and the language study's become socially communicative day by day .The article explores the implication of independent study and the necessity to advocate it, and how to raise students' independent study ability effectively in English teaching. The purpose of the article is to bring the independent teaching mode into the English class. It also explores the role teachers should play in the process to raise students' independent study ability.At present, the traditional teaching thoughts held by English teachers as well as students' passive study pattern obstruct the language study's efficiency and its application level. The article proposes the concrete operational step of how to raise the independent consciousness and ability.According to the independent study's teaching thought, the author chose two classes of Grade 1 in an ordinary senior high school whose English basises were almost equal and carried out a teaching experiment integrating the English teaching practice of senior high school. One is the comparison class, performing the traditional teaching mode; the other is the experimental class, performing the independent study teaching mode. It means that revolving the students' study goal, the teacher and students launch different activities in and out of the class. It proposes the class operational mode transiting from the leading independent study to the independent independent study. At the different stages in and out of the class, the teacher and students play different roles respectively so as to develop students' learning ability progressively. The mode seeks the relation between the development of independent study ability and the improvement of English study grades in order to explore the English teaching mode of independent study that suits senior high school students.Through the positive research for one term, questionnaires, the test's grades in the middle and after the experiment, observations and interviews, I find: this kind of teaching mode not only helps to develop students' independent study ability, but also the development of independent study ability can lead to the improvement of English study grades.
