As a new branch of modern linguistics research, Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) assimilating the results of scientific research in Linguistics, Sociology, Psychology and Mass Media, etc., has drawn more and more attention from scholars and researchers. It aims to explore and articulate the dialectical relationship between language and ideologies hidden behind language, through analyzing public discourses. The present study attempts to adopt the best of Critical Discourse Analysis at the same time, take the unique language features in to consideration, to study economic news discourses concretely and comprehensively. It aims to (1) develop a unique and comprehensive model for doing critical discourse analysis on economic news, and (2) examine the concealed ideologies behind the economic news samples as an illustration of the model offered. The present thesis consists of five chapters. Chapter1 is a brief introduction about the background of the study and the significance of studying economic news reports critically. Chapter 2 includes a brief review of former researches of critical approaches to analyzing news discourse, especially economic news discourse both home and abroad, and the unique characteristics of economic news language. Chapter 3 presents the theoretical foundation of the study, mainly Halliday's systemic functional grammar, Fairclough's three-dimensional model for doing critical discourse analysis, and Bell's idea of news editing process. A suggested unique modal for the critical analysis of economic news reports is also presented in this Chapter. By using this model, the relationship between the economic news discourse and the dominant ideology is described and analyzed in Chapter 4.The whole analytical procedure can be divided into three stages: Description, Interpretation and Explanation. Firstly, at the descriptive stage, the discourse features of economic news are analyzed by using the basic analytical methods in SFG, as well as the specific analysis of number that can also reflect ideologies, in spite of being ignored for long time. Secondly, at the interpretative stage, the selected economic news reports are analyzed socially, from the angles of intertextuality and news editing process. At the last stage, the social context in which the selected economic news happened is examined, with the aim to explore the concealed ideology and its influences on the language form.Through analyzing carefully, the author concludes in Chapter 5 that economic news as a product of a certain social practice, although always emphasized as fair and objective, is inevitablely influenced by ideology. The theoretical implications lies on providing a practical critical analyzing model for analysis of economic news discourse, as a result, providing a supplement to do CDA on mass media discourse. Its practical implication lies on helping readers to understand the methodology of CDA clearly, to heighten the ability of critically analyzing and reading, so that they can get more accurate and valuable economic information. Finally the limitations of the study are presented, and the suggestions for future research are also offered.
