In the field of Chinese film art, followed by Zhang Yimou, Chen Kaige, and others on behalf of the fifth-generation directors, the sixth-generation directors appeared with Hu Xue Yang, Zhang Yuan, Wang Xiaoshuai, Lou Ye, and others as the representatives. They took the great task of reforming the current situation of Chinese film industry with the great sense of the history responsibility. Represented by the director Wang Xiaoshuai and his works, this paper states the theme innovation of the sixth generation directors'film works.In "The days" and "Frozen", Wang Xiaoshuai shows a personal sense of loneliness, the lack of belonging and a loss of security in the movie, which is full of despair and loneliness. It can be said that the image of despair and the faithful heart are the two themes in the two films of Wang Xiaoshuai. The highlight of attention of "So close to Paradise" and "Drifters" is the seeker in the foreign land . By use of the record Image style, Wang Xiaoshuai shows happiness and sadness, growth and death in their daily lives, expresses their anxiety and the confusion and helplessness of life and conveys the director's concern and criticism on the reality, and humanistic care on the marginalized groups. In "Beijing Bicycle " and "Shanghai Dreams", Wang Xiaoshuai reflects another movie theme: pursue of city life. The former expresses the uncontrolled life and the loss with the face of society; The latter, expressing the struggle in the face of seeking individual position and the heating of the social conflicts in the process of the social reform, shows the cruelness of the history and its destroy of the individuals.On the basis of analyzing the theme's three aspects, we can find that Wang Xiaoshuai, as a typical representative of the sixth-generation directors, conducts a comprehensive breakthrough and subversion on the fifth generation directors and the Chinese film tradition. What he cares is not the historical responsibility and cultural destiny, but the compassion on the lower social community. He pays attentions to the experience of the individual, self-feeling and inner monologues. His film practice has the spirit of pioneering exploration, showing the era and people's mental and survival condition in this era.
