Western Feminist Translation Studies And Its Influence In China

Since the "Cultural Turn" in translation in the 1980s, translation studies from the perspective of culture have drawn more attention. Gender, as an important aspect of the category of culture, has been a new angle for the translation studies. Translation has long been regarded as secondary and subordinate to the original in the traditional translation studies, just as women are reduced to the second sex in the patriarchal society. For this reason, translation is often compared with women by researchers in the long history of its development. The similar experience relates translation to women. The influence of feminism on translation studies is mainly on three aspects, namely, on translation practice, translation theory and translation criticism.After being introduced into China, western feminist translation studies started to influence the Chinese translation circle. Many scholars have published articles in authoritative journals and magazines. But the feminist approach in translation studies in China is still in its initial stage, where applications and development of the theory are still lacking.This paper first reviews the development of the feminist translation in the west from the aspects of translation practice, theory and criticism and then discusses the study of gender issues in translation in China by combing all the papers and books in this aspect. At last, the characteristics of Chinese women translators are also summarized, by analyzing Eva Hung's translation practice as evidence.
