Translation studies is an interdisciplinary field consisting elements of socialscience and the humanities, dealing with the systematic study of the theory, thedescription and the application of translations, interpreting or both activities. Itborrows much from its adjacent fields such as linguistics, contrastive literature,history, philosophy, semiotics etc. This thesis focuses on the translation of EnglishSF literature from2000to2012in China and its influence on local SF writers’writing.This thesis is aimed at exploring the translation of SF literature from theEnglish world from2000to2012. Taking a cultural translation studies approach, thisthesis take a complete and thorough analysis of this period’s SF translation based onpoly-system theory and multiple causality theory. First off, this thesis makes aquantitative research of this period’s translation and then, it analyze it from theperspectives of the four causes of Pym’s multiple causality theory.Through the aforementioned quantitative and qualitative research, the thesisreaches the following pieces of conclusion:(1) From2000to2012, SF translation went through another wave in whichnumber of translations, whether in the form of serialization in magazines or off-prints,significantly surpassed that of any previous period.(2) During this period, SF translators went through tremendous change. As aresult, compared with Late Qing and Early Republic Era, translated qualitydeteriorated. In the meantime, a trend of series translators and translating partnersemerged during this period.(3) During this period, translation and publication of western SF was taken upby an increasing number of publishing houses, some of them previously involved inSF at all.(4) During this period, an increasing diversity of sub-genres and authors oforiginal novels emerged in SF translation. The role of cyberpunk translation becomesbigger with development of Internet lifestyle and literature.
