The study of double object construction(DOC)has always been a hot topic in generative grammar. It is generally acknowledged that the word order of the DOC in Mandarin Chinese is:V+IO+DO.However,in SZ dialect, there exists a special kind of DOC in which the direct object precedes the indirect one without any intervening dative marker. We regard this construction as quasi-double object construction(quasi-DOC), which can also be found in many other dialects of the south China. Although some scholars have conducted research on it,most of their studies are based on traditional grammar, and few scholars have studied it by adopting the relevant theories of generative grammar. Moreover, almost no researchers have touched upon this construction in SZ dialect within the framework of generative linguistics to date. This thesis, therefore, attempts to investigate the syntactic and semantic features of quasi-DOC in SZ dialect and to give a preliminary explanation concerning the derivation of this kind of DOC within the framework of generative grammar. This thesis first classifies the verbs in the DOCs of SZ dialect.Three characteristics of quasi-DOC are summarized. Then,we propose two different approaches regarding the derivation of quasi-DOC.One comes from Deng's(邓思颖2002)omission of the preposition, according to which quasi-DOC is derived from dative construction(DC)with the omission of the preposition. We further discuss the differences between the quasi-DOC in SZ dialect and the DOC in Mandarin Chinese. On the basis of Radford's(1997)split VP hypothesis,we put forward the so-called split AgrOP hypothesis. We would like to prove that quasi-DOC has its own deriving process, though it is closely related to DC and DOC. Moreover,we believe that split AgrOP hypothesis can give us a better account of the derivation of quasi-DOC.Through the analyses of the DOC in SZ dialect, the author sincerely hopes that the thesis can not only provide some useful corpora for the study of Chinese DOC,but also make some contribution to the understanding of the inner structure of DOC.we also hope that more scholars can study the Chinese dialect in formal linguistics so that the research of Chinese grammar can be enriched.
