In the late-1980s, China entered the historical transition period from the political society to economic society, the transformation of social structures has urged the adjustment and the change in people's diversified ideological concept. Part of intellectuals in the community has been under the unprecedented impact and the baptism in society's transformation, all very big changes happened in their values, morality ideals and behaviors etc.This article takes the intellectual image of novels in the transition period as an object of study, divides three parts to elaborate. The first part through the analysis of academism, being in the right field and civilian intellectual image, from top to bottom unfolds the overall characteristic of each kind of level intellectual. The second part contrasts intellectual image before transition with the later, from the aspects of spirit, emotional attitude, values orientation and social status, reveals the variation of this group in the mental outlook and personality characteristics after social reforming. The last part places them in the globalization background to research into the in-depth reason of the whole degradation. Objectively, the elite culture is restricted by the status quo of the multilayer society, including the history and the real political circumstance, the prominence of commerce tide and post-modern culture and so on, which has created the intellectual huge spiritual crisis, but the abdication of intellectual's sense of responsibility, the independent personality, the consciousness of suffering and the critical spirit, then has accelerated the intellectual spirit transformation.While carries on the analysis to the intellectual image, also points out the direction of contemporary intellectuals in the community, what role should play in the society as well as what kind of value orientation should have, and other issues to ponder.
