The recent development of Chinese animation industry confronts a bottleneck of impetuous industrial atmosphere, apparent commercial orientation and degraded artistic value. There has been a huge gap between the animation industry of China and its neighbor Japan in terms of theme, panting skills and character design. A research of Japanese commercial animation therefore makes sense. The research has been done on the basis of the development history of Japanese commercial animation. The key original animation directors and the plot patterns and painting skills of the adapted animation during different periods of time have been covered in this essay. The analysis of scenarios, painting styles and aesthetic meanings has been conducted through the combination of several artistic languages. The focus of the essay is the representation of Japanese national culture and the application of national artistic language by the directors of Japanese commercial animation. The essay starts from the birth and evolution of international animation and develops with a focus on the development of Japanese animation. Several representative works would be analyzed to explore the artistic features of Japanese animation directors. Taking large amount of cinematic expression techniques and artistic features, the styles of the directors are plural, such as the reminiscent sentiment of Hayao Miyazaki, the obscure and repressed mood of Mamoru Oshii, and the surrealistic expression technique of Satoshi Kon. These animation directors had made a huge success artistically and commercially.Another important part of Japanese commercial animation is the animation works adapted from the comic books. These works did possess outstanding artistic features and vivid figure character at the beginning. However, driven by the commercial profits they overdeveloped the plots, which in reverse undermined the artistic integrity of the whole work. In addition, this essay intends to figure out the deficiency in the development of Chinese animation industry and make a breakthrough on the artistic features of Chinese animation through a comprehensive analysis of representative Japanese commercial animation.
