Objective To investigate the mental health status of college students and describe the prevalence and risk factors for suicide attemptss among college students in Chongqing city. In order to provide basic information and background of scientific theory for prediction, and establish a prevention program for suicide attempts.Method During November 2006 to May 2007, we have randomly sampled and investigated 9808 students of 11 colleges in Chongqing city. The questionnaires "suicide attitude and mental health status questionnaire (University version -â…£)" provided from Beijing Huilongguan Hospital , Beijing Suicide Research and Prevention Center. Investigators who were trained strictly would carry out their live examination .The number of students should be controlled within 30 in the same classroom, The ratio of students and investigators was 6:1. A multiple logistic regression model was used to identify risk factors for suicide attempts.Result 169 (1.7%)of the 9808 college students reported suicide attempts and the ratio of boys and girls was 1:1.8; Multiple logistic analysis found that most important risk factors for suicide attempts were ranked as follows: prior suicide behavior in immediate family member(OR=3.87, 95%CI 2.3-6.5), higher intensity of death wish over last year (3.57, 2.2-5.9), associate with suicidal behavior(2.75, 2.0-3.8),had sex (2.62, 1.8-3.8),affect the daily lives and learning because of psychological problems in recent 1 month (2. 59, 1.8-3.7), other associate with suicide behavior(2.39, 1.6-3.5), female gender(2.35, 1.7-3.3),storage of sleeping medication in the home (2.12, 1.4-3.3), higher total scores of the overt aggressive behavior scale (1.98, 1.3-2.9),Lower Quality Of Life in recent 1 month (1.98, 1.3-2.8),higher level of impulsiveness (1.57, 1.1-2.3),affect the daily lives and learning because of Physical problems in recent 1 month (1.51,1.0-2.3),Lower scores of Social Support Scale(1.46, 1.0-2.1).Conclusion The combined actions of multi-factor are important mechanisms of suicide attempts. Suicide attempts is a frequently phenomenon in college students. Educators, Clinicians, and Parents should pay more attention to the work of suicide prevention. We should be concerned on mental health of college students, and strengthen social support services for them, particularly high risk groups, at the same time carry out the relevant public education. Develop a suicide prevention program according to the suicide risk factors. And according to the suicide risk factors ,we maked a plan which could be carried out to prevent suicidein future.
