In Chinese painting history there was ever a unique type of painting, which implied a simple, free and graceful life and was pervaded the sense of Zen. We name it Zen painting. Originally the type was established by Tang Dynasty Wang Wei, titled the Poet Buddha, who was the first great painter of the literati in history. He influenced what became known as the Southern school of Chinese landscape art.Zen, the product which Buddhism and Chinese traditional culture fuse, it has widespread and profound influence on the Chinese traditional arts. Philosophy of Zen enlightens the creation of landscape painting, which deliveries the perfection of Zen in a simple but vivid form. Under Wang Wei's effort, the philosophy of Zen and the sense of painting fuse into his landscape masterpieces which are characterized by strong brushstrokes contrasted with light ink washes and offer us a sense of silence. These masterpieces highlights how Wang Wei experienced it by practicing Zen rules and opens up very beautiful and profound aesthetic realm. Zen painting, the new style in Chinese arts was formed for it was rather popular in the Buddhists literal people with the belief of Buddhism. He was spoken of as the first to make his painting a combination of the sense of mood, the sense of landscape painting, the sense of poem and the sense of Zen which embodies his style of emptiness and delicacy as he formed the theory of inner voice and theory of sense of perfection form Zen into his paintings and made the artistic creation at Zen's bright and simple attitude. Wang Wei's paintings with sense of Zen were gems of paintings created by the literal people for they highlighted the landscape painting in Tang Dynasty. Wang Wei spent his whole life in being fond of beauty of mountains and rivers.There are five parts in this article with the main line of why Wang Wei established the Zen painting, what its style is and how it influenced the Chinese painting. The first part is the preface. And the second part is the brief introduction to Zen, Zen paintings, its origin and development, and its influence on Chinese aesthetic arts. In the third part we deeply analyze why Wang Wei initiated Zen painting. The fourth part mainly includes the identification of his Zen painting's style in many aspects, understanding and analysis of , which it has been said painted by him. As to the fifth part, these points are elaborated, such as Zen painting's position in the history of Chinese painting, influence on the later Zen painting, Japanese painting, Chinese literal or landscape painting, and revelation of practical significance about the creation of current Chinese painting.
