A Study On "Creative Treason" Of Literary Translation In Cross-cultural Context

Traditional translation theory regards translation activity as sheer language transfer between two languages, and the major task of translation studies is always language analysis and textual comparison. The concept of fidelity or faithfulness serves as the highest criterion for measuring translation quality. As a cross-space time, cross-language, cross-cultural and interdisciplinary activity, translation, especially the literary translation activity,treason has become an unavoidable essential feature.With the emergence of"cultural turn"by the end of the 1970s, the translation studies signifies that translation studies and researches have broken through traditional linguistic and aesthetic paradigms and gained a new dimension and perspective. Translation studies have become the introspection of cultures to some extent. Cultural studies approach to literary translation is a descriptive research, which means that the focus of this kind of study is not on the comparison of source and the target texts or the compliance of translated texts with translation criteria, but on the historical and social-cultural contexts in which specific translated text come into being. And then through the analysis of the roles these translated texts have played in the target culture, the difference and collision between source and target cultures and all kinds of distortion, collision and communication in the process of acculturation can be revealed.Enlightened by these cultural studies to literary translation, taking the theories of cultural schools (mainly deconstruction school, poly-system theory, rewriting theory and manipulation theory) as its theoretical basis, the author overall reviews the relevant studies to"creative treason"by scholars or translators both at home and abroad in history and attempt to prove the inevitability and cultural value of"creative treason"in literary translation in cross-cultural perspective. In addition, the author also conducts an analysis of the translator's subjectivity and creativity in literary translation so as to further the research on the"creative treason"and its significance in literary and cultural studies.
