Guangdong area locates on the remote south china. Its cultural development depended greatly on the Central culture before Ming and Qing Dynasties, when the emergence of the NanYuan poemt style and the scholars as Chen Xianzhang, Zhan Ruoshui and Qu Dajun thoroughly changed the academic cultural weakness in Guangdong province. On the contrary, Guangdong's popular novels showed an extraordinary splendour. There was no popular novels except that of the novelist Zhu Dingchen in the period of Emperor Wanli of Ming dynasty until the late period of Emperor Qianlong of Qing Dynasty. The novels in Qianlong period carried forward excellent former traditions, featured independently with strong Guangdong local geographical colour, made good use of dialects and local folklore, changed the cold and still situation of Guangdong novels, filled the creative blank of popular novels of the southen China. Based on former academic research, this article had its feet firmly planted at the interaction of historical development of the Qing Dynasty and and the regional economic and cultural of Guangdong. For the first time, this article gave a comprehensive and systematic study on Guangdong's popular novels in the late Qing Dynasty, also carried meticulous inspection of its social and cultural preconditions,revealed the local geographic and cultural connotation and art characteristics, thereby further graspped its historical positions and literary achievements, and gave reasonable and accurate evaluation.
