Patrick Modiano is an original writer in contemporary French literature. In his published works, he always portrays the figure of the same kind—the beach man. Therefore, the image of the beach man which this paper attempts to analyze from four parts is the key to understand Modiano's works.Part two of this article defines the image of the beach man and analyzes the traits of this image based on the texts. Part three explores the deep reasons why Modiano portrays the beach man from the blight in the author's growth, the traditional Jewish culture and the French social ideological trend in the 1970s. Part four is the focal point of this article. Firstly, this paper defines the Nouvelle Fable School and Nouvelle Fable Fiction. Secondly, The writer developes the Vacillating Model in the traditional European literature to reveal the lasted significance from the role theory. Then, this paper places the beach man with the figures portrayed by Kafka and Kundera at the same level to reveal the beach man's contemporary significance . The last part describes the creative means which Modiano portrays the beach man from parodying the detective novel and fragmentary narration. The aim of this paper is to point out the traits of the beach man and to reveal the connotation of this image .
