English for Specific Purposes (ESP) appeared in the 1960s and was introduced to China in the 1970s. The recent decades have witnessed a lot of research on both ESP and its application in teaching practice. China has achieved great progress in ESP world, but most of them concern with introducing of Western research findings. Meanwhile, some practical research work have been done in limited fields as business English, law English and etc. Unfortunately, few researches have been done on teaching English for Physical Education major students.The present study is an attempt to explore some prominent problems existing in teaching college English for PE majors. The study is experimental based on analysis of the data collected through questionnaires in the investigation carried out in different universities in Anhui province.In accordance with the results of the investigation, the author reflected upon teaching of college English for PE major students in universities and also proposed some suggestions for the improvement of college English teaching for PE majors, such as developing a syllabus, compiling sports related textbooks, doing research on learner needs and adjusting teaching according to the findings and etc.At the end of this thesis, the limitations of the present study are presented due to the limited space and time, and some suggestions for further research are also provided.
