Strategies For The Contradiction Between The Source Language Input And The Target Language Output

This thesis introduces the contradiction between the source language input and the target language output, and by exploring and analyzing the process of simultaneous interpretation taps the two strategies that a qualified simultaneous interpreter should adopt in solving this contradiction. With a view to offering a new perspective to simultaneous interpretation strategies, this thesis presents its readers with the complex, time-constrained process of simultaneous interpretation at double levels: the sequential process of simultaneous interpretation; and the parallel process of multiple-task performance from the perspective of human cognition and psycholinguistics in particular.Generally speaking, the process of simultaneous interpretation can be divided into three phases: the pre-comprehension phase, the speech comprehension phase and the output production phase. The pre-comprehension phase, involving language proficiency, extra-linguistic knowledge, topic-related knowledge and the interpreter's psychological condition, is here taken as a part of the process of simultaneous interpretation by reason that without these essential factors, the whole process of simultaneous interpretation can not go smoothly.Based on the analysis of the process of simultaneous interpretation, the author of this thesis proposed two strategies: shadowing and sight translation. The former has been typically used by researchers to study people's selective ability in audition. And it is also defined as a training technique which imitates all the contents involved in simultaneous interpretation except the interpretation. The latter, sight translation has long been an important part of simultaneous interpretation training. Most of the worldwide programs of simultaneous interpretation training include a section of sight translation, which usually takes up a considerable proportion of time in the program. While introducing these strategies, this thesis emphasizes the effect of shadowing in the speech comprehension phase, and the effect of sight translation in the output phase. However, there is no clear borderline between any two of the three phases, so the effect of these strategies may continue from phase to phase. But one thing is definite: with the help of these strategies, the simultaneous interpreter can solve the contradiction between the source language input and the target language output, thus improving the interpreting quality.The author of this thesis hopes that this study can throw some lights on simultaneous interpretation training and can be kind of theoretical reference for experiment designing in further researches.
