In the history of Chinese modern literatures, with the aide of"democracy"and"science", the pioneers of May 4th Movement based enlightenlism on their idea resource, built up theoretical structures on"for the life's sake", explored their artistic pursuit for innovating the nationality, all of which established the value orientation to"modernity"in Chinese modern literatures. Due to enormous culture differences between eastern and western societies, the ideal of"present-worldliness"among Chinese literati was concealed by enlightenlism with vast western vocabulary, thus resulting in the tendency towards pragmatism and utilitarianism in Chinese modern literatures."For the life's sake", being the discourse system in modern literature theory, which evolved from language contexts in China, Japan, Western countries and Russia, has lost the possibility of existing as an independent ideology since beginning. Instead, it only acted as one manifestation of social enlightenment to participate the utopian imagination of a nation-state during the course of history of modernization. The transition from tradition to modernity in Chinese literature theory has since then been realized.
