| Jia Baoyu's two times' dreamland tour plays an important role in revealing the story themes and promoting the develp ment of the plot. The theme revealed in the first eighty chapters is the coe- xistence of affection and vacancy, and the theme re- vealed in the last forty chapters is Blessing Virtues Disaster and Prurience. So this poses a contradiction. The theme changes, so does the dreamland features. The first tour expresses the authors'Idealism and the second shows the common customs. The two tours are poles apart. The second tour of the dreamland plays a key role in promoting the plot (especially Jia Baoyu's becoming a monk) development in the last forty chapters. However, it lacks logicalde- liberateness. The differences between JiaBaoyu's two times' dreamland tour can be seen as an epitome of defferences between the first eighty and last forty chapters. The main issue discussed here is to offer a new perspective for the study of the last forty chapters through the omparison between Jia Baoyu's two times'dreamland tour, and it is expected that an objective and fair evaluation is made for the last forty chapters. The thesis consists of five parts. The first part describes the comparison of the plot design between Jia Baoyu's two dreamland tours. The first tour not only conforms to the life experience but also is of logicality and symbol. However, the second tour lacks logicality but shows close connection between dreamland and reality. The second part describes the idealism of the dreamland and custom of the happy land. Dreamland is an apery of Taoism world, a Utopian feminine world and an equal and harmonious world. Dreamland and its realistic projection - Daguanyuan are of Utopian characters. Happy land is of custom characters, a strictly-graded and hierarchic world. The third part is the comparison of the theme unveiled by the two dreamland tours. The theme unveiled in the first dreamland tour is the coexistence of "affection" and "vacancy", and the theme unveiled by the second dreamland tour is "blessing, virtues, disaster and prurience". The fourth part describes the comparison of the plot development driven by Jia Baoyu's two dreamland tours. The first dreamland tour is to reveal the theme but acts little in plot development. The second tour not only reveals the theme of the last forty chapters but also acts to promote the plot development (Jia Baoyu became a monk). The fifth part discusses the structure links between Jia Baoyu's two dreamland tours. |
