The source material for my translation project is a novel entitled The Year We Turned Forty written by Liz Fenton & Lisa Steinke, who are not only best friends but the co-authors of other books such as The Status of All Things and Your Perfect Life. The novel features accurate descriptions of physical appearances and in-depth explorations of psychological inner worlds. This presents to readers a vivid picture of how characters of this book, who are approaching their middle age, deal with unexpected things in their life. The authors give no specific answers but simply lead us to rethink the possible ways life could be made more meaningful. All these features, together with the simplicity of language and the meaningful messages conveyed, make the novel worthy of translation.Three characteristics can be found in the selected text: dialogues are prominent;personal pronouns are utilized many times;participle phrases including present participle phrase and past participle phrase are frequent. After the translation is done, therefore, the ways these characteristics are handled are discussed, with special emphasis put on participle phrases.Specifically, the report is grouped into four parts. The first part covers an introduction to the authors and the book and reasons why the book is selected for translation. The second part mainly focuses on pre-translation preparations, translation schedule and post-translation quality control. The third part talks about the case study, including translation strategies adopted and specific examples. The last part is the conclusion which contains the major findings, the significance and limitations of the translation and the report,as well as the suggestions for further study.
