With the rapid development of web-based distance education, more and more learners are participating in on-line Japanese learning. However, research into web-based instruction of Japanese, especially research on Japanese course design can not satisfy the requirements of the current practice of Japanese web-based instruction. This thesis discussed domestic research findings on web-based instruction of Japanese and computer-assisted Japanese learning, outlines the course of the development in Japanese instruction: the development in computer technology has given rise to computer-assisted instruction preparation, computer-assisted instruction (CAI) utilizing multimedia technology and CAI utilizing multimedia courseware; the widespread of the Internet has provided rich materials as well as a communication platform. Web-based Japanese instruction is the combination of the three. Then, it probes deeply into the current situation of web-based instruction of the Japanese language in the net college of S University in the form of questionnaire which is based on on-line course evaluation criteria widely adopted in China or worldwide. The author concludes that such problems exist: present course columns need improvement so as to guide students'learning better; and the presentation quality, learner control and navigation design of the courseware inconvenience on-line learning. The author improves the course design of Japanese intensive reading in the above-mentioned areas. The improved version is tried out among Japanese-major students from the net college, and feedback from students and teachers show that the improvement better evokes students'learning interest and promotes on-line learning of Japanese.
