"Zhe" is a common and important particle in modern Chinese. For the last decades, many researches have examined the grammatical function and meaning of "zhe",but they have reached no consensus. In this study, I explore further the function and meaning of "zhe" on the basis of previous research, and hope to arrive at a satisfactory conclusion. Some of the fundamental concepts and theories on cognitive functional linguistics are adopted in the thesis to probe into the semantic characteristics which decide its syntactic phenomena and the function of "Zhe"We put all the kinds of usages relating to "Zhe" under its semantic frame, including its syntactic limits, conditions of forminga sentence, the ambiguity of dynamic and static meaning, pragmatic functions, combination of "Zhe" and other aspects, the relation between "Zhe" and modals. The essay includes 7 chapters with more than 40,000 words in total. In chapter one,the introduction consists in the objects for examining, the significance of the research, the range of argument, the approach of analyzing, the background of related theories and the explanation of the corpora' s origin. The second chapter trims the mainstream viewpoints of "zhe" adopted in the academies, including the distribution, the grammatical meaning and pragmatic function. In chapter 3,we distinguish the meaning of "durative" and "progressive" and think "Zhe" expresses "durative" not "progressive". There are static continuity and dynamic continuity, which are conflicting in many cases. The fourth chapter starts to analyze the sectional feature of "Zhe" We introduce the conception of "unbound" which is equal to the idea of section."Zhe" is used as a verb originally, indicating a physical special category of attaching, which was gradually grammaticalized to mental and temporal categories of unbound. It is the feature of unbound that constrains the semantic choice and the distribution of "zhe" some characteristics of the compound aspects with "V着V" construction are also shown in this chapter. We continue to discuss the durative feature of "Zhe" in 3 perspectives in Chapter 5.Firstly,it' sgrammatical meaning of durative influence the combination of verbs and "Zhe" Secondly, the durative feature restricts the time adverbials.Thirdly, durative is also the feature of state which decides "Zhe" is commonly used to describe in different scenes. The sixth chapter mainly researches the feature of ambiguity of static and dynamic. We find out some methods to differentiate the ambiguity of "Zhe".We also examine the co-occurrence of "Zhe" and modal verbs, including the epistemic modals and the non-epistemic modals. The ambiguity can be differentiated through the interaction of "Zhe" and modals.Chapter 7 is the conclusion, summarizes the main ideal of the thesis, and point out some further questions to be discussed.
