Fuzziness is closely related with literature and translation for it is one of the basic features of human language. Therefore, the thesis attempts to introduce the notion of fuzziness into the study of classical Chinese poetry translation, including the influence of fuzziness in the process of translation and fuzziness in translation strategy. The thesis is composed of five chapters. The first chapter is a general introduction to the whole thesis. It first refers to the concept of fuzzy set and fuzzy linguistics. It then comes to the relationship between fuzzy linguistics, literary works and translation. Finally it brings out the topic of this thesis. In the second chapter, to start with, the author briefly reviews the researches and achievements in fuzzy linguistics, especially the diverse forms for fuzziness and various definitions of fuzziness. It also makes an overall survey on fuzziness in translation studies in China. Later, the treatment of fuzziness in the thesis is made clear, and the purpose and significance of this thesis are also introduced.Chapter three is devoted to a thorough and systematic investigation into the far-reaching influence of fuzziness in translating classical Chinese poetry through a detailed analysis of multiple English versions against the source text. The influence of fuzziness is discussed in terms of phonetic fuzziness, semantic fuzziness, syntactic fuzziness, image fuzziness and thematic fuzziness. Abundant specific examples are also cited to make this study compressive and adequate. Chapter four is mainly concerned about fuzzy translation strategy, which is illustrated as follows: translating fuzzy expression in the SL into fuzzy expression in the TL; translating fuzzy expression in the SL into precise expression in the TL; translating precise expression in the SL into fuzzy expression in the TL.The last chapter serves as a conclusive part of the thesis as a whole. When translating classical Chinese poetry, translators should pay more attention to the fuzziness of the original poems, and then adopt fuzzy translation strategies to achieve fuzzy equivalence between the original version and the translated version.
